Match Report: Yorkshire Post: 22th December 1919:

LEEDS UNITED v LINCOLN CITY: UNITED'S FIRST VICTORY.

At the fifth attempt Leeds United secured both points in a Midland League match. The game took place on th Elland Road Ground, Leeds, before about 4,000 spectators, most of whom were probably satisfied with the performance of the experimental team put into the field. In the first half the Leeds forwarda were not a good finishing side, but later, with Birtles in the centre and Ellson at inside right, the line worked well. At back, Tate, a player from the Barnsley district, early strained his right leg, and thus much work was thrown upon Dodsworth, who responded to the call well. Rounds gave his usual skilful display. Lincoln City were always seeking and making openings, but were not quite strong enoughs uccessfully to terminate skilful attacks.

Nothing was scored in the first half, and the blank score sheet about represented the merits of the elevens, although United had the wind at their backs. The play of the United in the opening minutes of the secondhalf led the supporters to anticipatesomething good and they had only to wait ten minutes for a goalfrom the foot of Birtles, following a shot by Ellson that struck the crossbar. Leeds were the superior side in this half but no addition was made to the score until about five minutes from the close of play, when Bedford ran through all opposition and scored a fine goal with a long slanting shot..
